President Ronald Reagan once called the Soviet Union the "Evil Empire". The Soviet Union has been gone for 10 years and fifteen new countries have taken its place. This J-Term trip will compare the successes and failures of four (4) of these countries as they attempt to become democratic with market economies.
Russia and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have undergone major changes!!! Some of these changes have been for the better, some for the worse. In both Russia and the Baltic states you will see massive signs of Westernization, from the Marlboro Man to the M&M guys, displayed next to 1,000 year-old churches and other architecture. This course will explore both positive and negative changes that Russia and the Baltic States have undergone since the breakup of the old Soviet Union. We will explore the dichotomy of the old palatial Russia/Soviet Union with the new challenges of democracy, capitalism, poverty, and crime. As part of our coursework we will visit various cultural sites, such as the Hermitage Museum, Pushkin Palace and the Kremlin, as well as have discussions with professors, businessmen and politicians to get their perspective on the changes that Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are currently undergoing.
Political Science Professor Jeffrey Roberg will be leading this trip to Russia and the Baltic States in May/June 2002.
